Non-kickstarter pre-order question

Good evening,
I was curious if Kickstarter and pre-order numbers are the same or different. I'm seeing posts here showing orders in the 2000's being delivered, and when I asked I was told that mine (in the 1700's, pre-ordered on January 2015) hasn't been reached yet.
I was told that I could get a refund if I wanted. I do not want a refund. Any information would be greatly appreciated.
